Functional Skills

Functional Skills qualifications are designed to enable students to develop confidence and fluency in Maths and English. The skills taught will help learners to participate and progress in education, training and employment. Functional Skills assessments are graded as either a Pass or Fail.

Functional Skills qualifications are available at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

Entry Level 3 is below GCSE level, Level 1 is comparable to GCSE grades 3, and Level 2 is comparable to GCSE grade 4 or (C grade).

The qualifications are often a central part of a learner’s programme of study. They form a key part of apprenticeships and are also often studied alongside other vocational learning programmes. These subjects are frequently cited by employers as essential when recruiting staff.

Exams can be taken online or as a paper exam. Exams are conducted throughout the year, at the time the learner is ready to be assessed. These exams are externally assessed and carried out under exam conditions at our assessment centre in Redruth. Where reasonable adjustments allow exams can be undertaken at different venues.
